Job market in Dallas

Dominant industries in Dallas include banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, healthcare, medical research, transportation and defence. Dallas is home to a number of Fortune 500 companies, including ExxonMobil, Kimberly-Clark, Neiman Marcus and Southwest Airlines.

Dallas is dubbed the Silicon Prairie, as it is among America's largest employment centres for high technology industries, with big names such as Dell, Motorola and Cisco having offices in the city. In addition, Dallas is known as a hub for telecommunications manufacturing in the USA.

The Telecom Corridor is the name given to an area of North Dallas thanks to the high concentration of telecommunication companies on a three-mile strip along Highway 75. Companies with offices on the Telecom Corridor include Nortel, Ericsson, Alcatel and South Western Bell. 

Dallas’ economy did suffer as a result of the global economic downturn. Those hardest hit are unskilled workers and recent graduates. Some sectors such as finance, transportation and manufacturing have experienced some level of growth but others such as construction, energy and healthcare have seen substantial cutbacks.

Competition for jobs in Dallas is high and companies are looking to hire those with considerable experience within their field rather than recent graduates or those who require more training.
