Background

Having opened in 1990 as the Canadian Preparatory College with just six students, CIS has grown into a 2,900-strong kindergarten to Grade 12 school spanning two campuses, both with their own unique feel and character. The Lakeside campus opened in 2011 and has state-of-the-art facilities, including sport-specific courts and fields, a multi-storey library, a Performing and Fine Arts Centre and a fully equipped 500-seat auditorium. Part of Tanjong campus is listed as a Singapore Heritage Site, yet facilities are cutting-edge and modern. As a whole, the school has a diverse student body representing over 70 nationalities. The school has two campuses – Lakeside in the west, the original school, is from Pre-K to Grade 12, while Tanjong Katong in the East Coast district is from Early Years to Grade 6.

Designed to provide a world-class education to students from Pre-Kindergarten through to Grade 12, the Canadian International School’s Lakeside Campus combines state-of-the-art classrooms, learning pods, and community spaces designed to foster the educational and developmental needs of all students. The campus’ high-quality indoor facilities include dedicated makerspaces, music and science labs, a 500-seat theatre and multi-storey library. These are augmented by the campus’ numerous outdoor spaces, including an Olympic-length swimming pool, sports fields and a state-of-the-art Kindergarten Outdoor Discovery Centre.

What the school says

“The Canadian International School offers students an opportunity to develop through a diverse and challenging curriculum and a wide range of activities. Students are given ownership of the learning process and are encouraged to actively participate in their own education by setting personal goals and practising ongoing self-evaluation. Our inquiry-based programmes and activities encourage students to discover their interests and strengths. All of this is done in a safe, caring and supportive school environment that fosters positive attitudes and allows students to challenge themselves and be risk-takers, without the fear of being judged.”

Curriculum

CIS is one of the few international schools in Singapore to offer all three IB programmes – the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. The CIS curriculum is benchmarked against national curriculums globally, allowing students to transition to another school when the time comes, or to graduate to universities anywhere in the world.

Fees

Fees for the 2017/18 year range from 30,510 SGD a year for Pre-Kindergarten school up to 38,710 SGD a year in Grade 12. The fees are payable before the start of each of the two school semesters in equal instalments. There is also an additional application fee of 2,500 SGD and a confirmation fee of 3,500 SGD.

Location

CIS has two campuses on the island, Lakeside in the west, and Tanjong Katong in the east. Both campuses are conveniently located near public transport and are a short drive from most expat communities – both in the centre of Singapore and in the East Coast area.

From the head teacher

“CIS provides a vibrant learning community and a caring and supportive home to over 2,500 students across two campuses. Our passionate, dedicated and highly trained staff challenges each of our students to reach his or her individual potential. On behalf of the Canadian International School community, I invite you to come and explore our school. We welcome the opportunity to share with you the delight that comes in joining the caring and committed learning community that is CIS.”
