I am planning a move to Sydney and want to find out about renting an apartment there. I will be staying with a distant relation for the first couple of weeks in Double Bay area, but I need to find somewhere to live asap. How easy is it to rent in Sydney; I assume there are decent estate agents. I am 26 and single and just want a small apartment somewhere central - can someone suggest a good neighbourhood to live in sydney and also give an indication of rental prices? Thank you. Melissa

Hi Melissa!

Just like any big cosmopolitan destination, Sydney has a variety of great neighbourhoods to choose from. If you're single and you don't mind exchanging extra space for extra vibe, than the CBD is certainly  a good choice. Accommodation in Sydney's city centre ranges from incredibly expensive to reasonable, you just have to put the time into looking.

There's plenty of estate agents in Sydney, but it's best to use one in the area in which you think you'd like to live.

The average rental price in Sydney in March 2011 for a 1-bedroom was AUD 1200 - but obviously you can find property well below and well above that price.

If you have a family, best areas are the Northern Suburbs. Safe with many excellent schools.

If your single eastern suburbs, inner west and lower north shore are your best options you will be near bars restaurants andcpublic transport. If you want the beach life add Manly and Bondi ton top of the list. For families the eastern suburbs, lower north shore, north shore and northern beaches are the best. If you have family in the east maybe start there but it is expensive.
